Our Chickens

You will find a range of Chickens here at Fairfield Animal Centre. You will find;

  • Pekin – Pekins can have normal smooth feathers, or can be ‘frizzle’. Frizzle birds possess a gene that causes the feathers to curl away from the body giving an ‘electric shock’ appearance.
  • Buff Orpington –  The breed was developed to produce larger birds for the table and better laying hens, producing more eggs.
  • Poland – The Poland chicken (not Polish) is an ancient ornamental breed. They are unlikely to have originated from Poland, although one story suggests this.

There are more chickens on earth than people – 25 billion. There are also more chickens than any other bird species.
