Our Ponies
Here are some facts about our Shetland pony cohort.
Harry is a Shetland pony and he is chestnut in colour. He is 9.5 hands high and loves carrots a bit too much!
William is a Shetland pony and is skewbald, which means he has a mixture of coloured (in his case chestnut) and white patches. He is 9.2 hands high.
Mark is a Shetland pony, he is chestnut in colour. He is 9.5 hands high.
Alfie is a Shetland pony, he is chestnut in colour. He is 9.2 hands high. He is usually the one neighing loudly!
Did you know that horses and ponies are measured in hands? Hands, ancient unit of length, now standardized at 4 inches (10.16 cm) and used today primarily for measuring the height of horses from the ground to the withers (top of the shoulders).

Shetland ponies are a very ancient breed, believed to have existed in the Shetland Islands for over 2000 years. Shetland ponies are very hardy and can survive very harsh winters on very little food. In fact, if they get too much food, they get fat! For their size, the Shetland pony is the strongest of all horse breeds.

WHAT DO WE EAT?
Shetland ponies love grass, but grass can have too much sugar in it for ponies. We feed them on longer coarse grass which is less rich. Ponies also have hay in the winter.
