Our Ducks
We have a wide range of ducks here at Fairfield Animal Centre across several ponds. You will see some of the following breeds;
- Aylesbury Ducks
- Indian Runner Ducks
BABY ANIMALS
Did you know that baby Ducks are called Ducklings.
CALL DUCKS
We have a variety of Call Ducks at Hope Nature Centre, including Crested Call Ducks and Apricot Call Ducks.
There are lots of varieties of Call duck. The ten standard colours are: Apricot, Bibbed, Black, Blue Fawn, Dark silver, Magpie, Mallard, Pied, Silver and White.
All ducks have highly waterproof feathers. A duck’s feathers are so waterproof that even when the duck dives underwater, the downy underlayer of feathers right next to the skin will stay completely dry.
ANIMAL GROUPS
Did you know that a group of Ducks are called a Herd or a Raft when on water!
Ducks are outgoing, social animals who feel most at ease when they’re in a larger group of other ducks. They also tend to be louder when in a group!
WHAT DO WE EAT?
The natural diet of ducks and other waterfowl is aquatic vegetation such as pond weed, along with seeds, insects, worms, small water snails and amphibians, and even crustaceans such as crayfish.
